Doxycycline is an antibiotic used to treat a various bacterial infections in the body. It relieves pain caused by the infection and inflammation.

Uses of Doxycycline

The antibiotic properties are used in the treatment of:

-Chest infections like pneumonia and bronchitis;

-Urinary tract infections;

-Sexually transmitted diseases; Infections due to Chlamydia including uncomplicated urethral,

-Endocervical or rectal infections;

-Some bacterial eye infections like trachoma, caused by Chlamydia.

-Severe acne;

-Some parasitic stomach infections.

 

How does Doxycycline function?

Doxycycline, (antibiotic), inhibits protein synthesis in susceptible bacteria by blocking the transcription stage. It basically starves the infection. This prevents the infections from spreading.

The active ingredient doxycycline hyclate is a broad-spectrum antibiotic. It is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections.

 

What are the side effects of Doxycycline?

The most commonly Doxycycline reported side effects include:

-Anorexia, diarrhea, nausea, sore tongue and difficulty swallowing

Also, heartburn or indigestion due to irritation of the esophagus.

 

When should Doxycycline not be used?

You should not use Doxycycline if you are:

-Allergic to Doxycycline or other tetracycline antibiotics

-Pregnant or are breastfeeding

-Under 12 years of age

-Using other medication that interacts with Doxycycline, including penicillin antibiotics, barbiturates, have epilepsy,

-Been prescribed anticoagulants

-Taking supplements or vitamins that contain iron preparations, which may reduce the absorption of Doxycycline

 

How do you take Doxycycline?

You should take Doxycycline once daily with a glass of water with food, preferably just before a meal, to reduce stomach effects.

 

How long should you take Doxycycline?

Always follow the prescribed Doxycycline amount and dosage received from your Doctor.

 

Missed dose of Doxycycline

If you miss a dose of Doxycycline take it as soon as you remember, unless it is time to take the next dose, then skip the missed dose.  Do not take a double dose.

 

How should Doxycycline be stored?

You should store your Doxycycline below 77°F in a cool dry place out of direct sunlight.
